The Honda CBR1000RR was the successor to the CBR954RR. While evolving the CBR954RR design, few parts were carried over to the CBR1000RR. The compact 998 cc (60.9 cu in) in-line four was a completely fresh design, with unique bore and stroke dimensions, race-inspired cassette-type six-speed gearbox, all-new ECU-controlled ram-air system, dual-stage fuel injection, and center-up exhaust featuring a new computer-controlled butterfly valve. The chassis was likewise all new, including an organic-style aluminum frame composed of Gravity Die-Cast main sections and Fine Die-Cast steering head structure, inverted fork, Unit Pro-Link rear suspension, radial-mounted front brakes, and a centrally-located fuel tank hidden under a faux cover. Additionally, the Honda Electronic Steering Damper (HESD) debuted as an industry first system which drastically improved stability and nearly completely eliminated head shake while automatically adjusting for high and low speed steering effort.
A longer swingarm acted as a longer lever arm in the rear suspension for superior traction under acceleration and more progressive suspension action. Substantially longer than the corresponding unit on the CBR954RR (585 mm (23 in) compared to 551 mm (21.7 in)) the CBR1000RR's 34 mm (1.3 in) longer swingarm made up 41.6 percent of its total wheelbase. The CBR1000RR's wheelbase also increased, measuring 1405 mm (55.3 in); a 5 mm (0.2 in) increase over the 954.
Providing room for a longer swingarm required massive changes to the engine architecture, another reason the CBR1000RR power plant shares nothing with the 954. Shortening the engine compared to the 954 meant rejecting the conventional in-line layout. Instead, engineers positioned the CBR1000RR's crankshaft, main shaft and countershaft in a triangulated configuration, with the countershaft located below the main shaft, dramatically shortening the engine front to back, and moving the swingarm pivot closer to the crankshaft. This configuration was first successfully introduced by Yamaha with the Yamaha YZF-R1 model in 1998 and inspired superbike design in the following years to date.

CBR900RR
The CBR900RR was introduced in 1993 and was fitted with an 893 cc (54.5 cu in) inline-4 engine. When introduced, it set a precedent for light weight in the super bike class. At 453 lb (205 kg) with a full tank of gas, the CBR900RR was just 4 lb (1.8 kg) heavier than Honda's own CBR600F2, and 76 lb (34 kg) lighter than the next-lightest open-class machine at the time, the Yamaha FZR1000. Minor changes to the '94 model included an improved shift drum to cure notchy shifting, and steadier mirrors.
In a move to refine the CBR900RR's handling traits over bumpy pavement, the 1995 model's suspension was upgraded with revised spring and damping rates, and a compression adjuster was added to the front fork. More aggressive bodywork incorporated a "cut reflector" design headlight and fewer of the CBR's unique fairing holes. Slimmer and firmer footpegs were patterned after the RC45 and a shift linkage replaced the original model's backward pedal. A new instrument panel included an electronic speedometer that measured speed from the countershaft sprocket. CBR918RR
1996 brought the first major changes to the CBR900RR. In order to achieve a more optimized balance of rigidity, Honda significantly altered the 1996 CBR's chassis and suspension. The frame and swingarm were fabricated from larger, thinner-walled extrusions for reduced torsional rigidity. The fork and shock internals were re-designed, and the swingarm pivot raised by 5 mm (0.20 in). Revised ergonomics brought the bars 10 mm (0.39 in) higher and swept back five degrees more than earlier models, along with a slimmer gas tank. Engine updates included a bump in displacement to 918 cc (56.0 cu in) via a 1 mm (0.039 in) bore increase, slightly higher compression, a curved radiator, larger muffler, extra clutch plates, smaller alternator, and the addition of a throttle position sensor. With the revised motorcycle came a revised name of CBR918RR. The 1996 model carried over to 1997 unchanged except for the updates to color/graphics offerings.
In 1998, Honda continued subtle refinements in the CBR918RR's chassis. It saw frame stiffness closer to the original model's, revised suspension internals, and 5 mm (0.20 in) less triple clamp offset (an almost universal aftermarket upgrade to previous models). New brake calipers acted on larger front discs, the fairing was re-shaped and raised footpegs subtly changed ergonomics again. Eighty percent of the engine's internals were all-new to reduce weight and minimize friction; other updates included redesigned combustion chambers and porting, aluminum composite cylinders, new pistons, a smaller and lighter clutch pack, revised gearbox ratios, larger radiator, and a new stainless steel exhaust header.
CBR929RR
A major revision for the open-class Honda resulted in the CBR929RR, aimed squarely at the Yamaha YZF-R1. A completely new 929 cc (56.7 cu in) engine incorporated fuel injection, more oversquare cylinder dimensions, larger valves set at a narrower included angle, lighter internals, and an all-titanium, HTEV-equipped exhaust system. The "pivotless" chassis had the swingarm mounted to the engine cases but incorporated a brace underneath the engine. Updated suspension and brakes included an inverted front fork and huge 330 mm (13 in) front discs; and the 16 in (410 mm) front wheel was replaced for a more common 17 in (430 mm) wheel.CBR954R
In 2002, engine capacity increased to 954 cc (58.2 cu in) which resulted in the CBR954 name. Larger injectors and radiator, re-mapped electronic fuel injection, and a more powerful computer were also added. The bodywork and fairings were reworked for a sleeker, more aerodynamic feel. The frame was strengthened and a more rigid swingarm added and the riding position/pegs were raised to allow for greater lean angles. Dry weight reduced to 168 kg (370 lb).
The CBR954RR would be replaced by an all new CBR1000RR in 2004.

On 6 September, 2006, Honda revealed an all new CBR600RR for the 2007 model year.
Honda's middleweight sport bike underwent a complete and total redesign for 2007 with reducing the CBR600RR's weight as their primary focus. The result was a 20 lb (9.1 kg) reduction in dry weight over the 2006 model, from 361 lb (163.7 kg) to 341 lb (154.7 kg).
In redesigning the CBR600RR for lighter weight and increased performance, Honda's R&D engineers started with the engine. The completely new engine is the smallest and lightest powerplant in the super sport class by a significant margin - its designers having used careful positioning of all internal components to achieve significant reductions in the motor's length, width, and height, as well as reducing weight by 2 kg (4.4 lb) compared to the 2006 model's powerplant. While the new engine is smaller and lighter than its predecessor, it also offers increased performance, to the tune of a manufacture claimed 118 hp (88 kW) at 13,500 rpm. At speed, that figure is increased significantly by the highly efficient centrally-located ram-air duct in the bike's nose.
Wrapped around this tiny but powerful engine is an all-new frame, significantly lighter, slimmer, and more compact than that of the 2006 600RR. The frame is produced using what Honda calls Fine Die-Cast (FDC) technology, which allows them to build a lighter frame without compromising strength or rigidity. The reflexes of the new bike are sharpened by its 22 mm (0.87 in) shorter wheelbase, as well as by the designer's focus on strict mass centralization. Despite the shorter wheelbase, the 2007 model's swingarm is actually 5 mm (0.20 in) longer than that of the 2006, made possible by the more compact dimensions of the new bike's engine.
The suspension of the 2007 model is carried over almost unchanged from the 2006 bike, with the same 41 mm (1.61 in) inverted fork in front, and Honda's unique Unit Pro-Link rear suspension configuration damping the rear wheel. The 2007 machine's lighter weight and better chassis configuration allows the carry-over suspension to perform much better than it did on the old model. The new three-spoke cast aluminum wheels are also lighter than those on the 2006 bike, which further contributes to the enhanced performance of the suspension. The brakes feature dual radial-mount 4-piston calipers clamping twin 310 mm (12.20 in) discs up front, and a single-piston caliper squeezing a 220 mm (8.66 in) disc at the rear. Hidden below the steering head is an updated version of the Honda Electronic Steering Damper (HESD) system, which also available on the CBR1000RR. This latest iteration of the HESD offers faster response and more seamless operation than ever before.
The smaller, sharper-edged new front upper fairing is dominated by the large central ram-air duct which feeds the airbox through an opening in the steering head section of the frame and is separated from the sides of the fairing by a large gap which Honda claims is for air management purposes. The tail-section is similarly smaller and sharper-edged, riding atop a heavily restyled under-seat muffler.
The 2007 Honda CBR600RR was made available in U.S. dealerships in Spring of 2007 at an MSRP of US$9,499. The motorcycle carried over with only color scheme changes for the 2008 model year.

History
Racing roots
The CBR600RR was developed from and inspired by the Honda RC211V MotoGP bike. The similar physical appearance of the CBR600RR and RC211V is intentional. Underneath the looks lie MotoGP technologies that were made available for the first time on a production motorcycle such as the Unit Pro-Link rear suspension and Dual Stage Fuel Injection (PGM-DSFI). Both were taken directly from Honda's MotoGP bike. While it's not uncommon for street bikes to utilize racing technology, this was the first time totally new technologies found their way to the production line the same year they made their way to the professional racing grid. The bike receives the "RR" designation for "race replica" because of its emphasis on racing characteristics such as an advanced braced swingarm, center-up exhaust system, and more aggressive riding position. The 2003 model carried over to 2004 technically unchanged, but with new color schemes.
2005 revision


In 2005, the CBR600RR received a major revision with new body work, fully adjustable inverted front forks, a set of track-inspired disc brakes with radial-mounted four-piston calipers, and an entirely new aluminum frame, swingarm and rear shock. The midrange power was also increased. These changes along with additional refinements to the engine and exhaust system all came together to bring CBR600RR's weight down nine pounds, although Motorcycle USA.com measured the 2005 model as being 22 lb (10.0 kg) lighter than the 2004 model. MSRP for the 2005 model was US$8,799. Except for new color schemes, the 2006 model was unchanged from the 2005 model and had an MSRP of US$8,999
